PETER HAAG and MARGARET KEHRER
PETER
M. HAAG
Immigrated to America in 1847 |
m. MARGARET KEHRER
Immigrated to America in 1840, at age 5 per
1900 Census.
 |
on February 23, 1851 |
in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Portsmouth, OH |
3Peter Haag was born September 07, 1822 in Bebelsheim, Bavaria, Germany,
and died June 18, 1907.
Sandra Haag Hayden discovered that Peter immigrated to America in 1847,
though she has found no ship record, no Declaration of Intent, nor any
Naturalization record. She did, however, find in the 1900 Census
that Peter Haag
was naturalized in 1852.
At the age of 27, he came to Portsmouth OH, and a year later married
Margaret Kehrer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. He was
12 years older than his wife Margaret who was born 1835 in Kronau Baden Germany#.
His occupation was a "drayman", from which he retired in 1887.
According to the second
edition of "The New A to Zax: a comprehensive
genealogical dictionary for genealogist
and historians" by Barbara Evans,
a drayman is a hauler of freight.
A dray is a vehicle (sled, wagon, etc.)
used for hauling freight in return
for drayage (the cost or fee), or, the
occupation of driving the horse
who pulled a dray. Dray horses were
usually Belgian or Percheron (huge
horses).
Sandra also discovered that he purchased a lot (#676) in December of 1856
with Augustus Kehrer (Margaret's father?) and then lived at 48 East Fourth
St, Portsmouth, OH for over 50 years. In the 1860 Census, Peter
Haag family and August Kehrer family are living side by side in Portsmouth
OH. The property was sold in 1948 after Peter and Margaret's son
George Haag died. Also in the 1870 Census it is noted that Frances Kehrer, Margaret's sister was living with them.
3Margaret Kehrer Haag died in 1903. Both died in Portsmouth, Ohio
- he at the age of 85, she at 68. His grandson remembers the stormy/rainy
night when Peter died in Portsmouth. He describes Peter as "lying
in bed with his long white beard on top of a quilt". Though there
is no tombstone, Sandra discovered that both Peter and Margaret are buried
in St. Mary's section of Greenlawn Cemetery with three of their single
children.

Joseph created the first wooden heels in the Columbus area. And,

m. JEAN AUDREY REPLOGLE |
on December 31, 1939 |
Deceased |
DONALD LEWIS WOLF,
born
May 11, 1918, married JEAN AUDREY REPLOGLE,
daughter
of RAYMOND REPLOGLE and MINNIE SCHMUHL. Jean was born
May 22, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan, and died June 11, 1974 in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida.
Don was a very tall man at 6'5", but his brother Joseph Philip Wolf topped him - at 6'7". While living in Columbus Ohio, the three Wolf
children, Don, Joe and Helen, suffered the death of their father when they
were young. The second marriage of their mother was very difficult
on them and ultimately Helen and Joe masterminded the "escape" for
all three of them. They just up and left - with clothes on their
back basically - and hitchhiked all the way to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where
they lived together and provided for their own needs. .
Joseph married someone from Columbus Ohio and returned there. Helen
stayed in the Fort Lauderdale area, married and had a daughter. Don married Jean Replogle and remained in
the
Fort Lauderdale area for
many years. Don built his first home there - as he earned enough
money to buy some lumber, he bought it. And built. Then as
they had more money, he bought something else, etc. A true pay-as-you-go
house! Don and Jean began their family - a son and two daughters.
