JOSEPH (OR JAMES) AUGUST AVILLA
was born October 9, 1891 in Hawaii,
a natural born citizen. He married a Matilda F.
(Freitas?) who was born at sea, likely on her parents' immigration journey from
Portugal to Hawaii in 1899. She was "naturalized" per the 1930 Census.
Note: Some websites list them as Joseph August Avilla, Jr.
and Matilda Freitas, and that they
married on 24 February 1915.
Per his
WWI Registration Card: Below
is his WWI Registration Card listing as Joseph August Avilla. He was
medium build and height and had black hair and eyes. He was working as
a chauffeur and was married.
Per the 1920 Census
for Honolulu taken on January 16th, they lived at 1764 Luso Street and he
was employed as a chauffeur. "James"
was 29 and his wife Matilda
was 21.
They had two children; daughter,
Dorothy
(Genevieve) Avilla was 4 (born
10 days before Christmas in 1915) and her brother
Albert J. Avilla* was 8 months (born 1919).
*Note:
Albert J. Avilla
passed away before the next census, when he sustained a leg injury but refused to tell
anyone. It was discovered too late and he died of gangrene that could not be
treated.
Per the 1930 Census for 3041 Brokaw Street, Oahu,
Honolulu County, Honolulu City taken on April 9th, "Joseph" is now 39 years old and married to Matilda who is
31. Joseph is working as a truck driver for an express
company. They have the following children, all living with them
and all born in Hawaii:
Dorothy (Genevieve)
Avilla, age 14 (born
15 December 1915)
William Avilla, age 7 (born 1923)
Marie "Nina" Avilla, age 2 (born
March 30, 1928; died June 2, 1997). She became Mrs. Marie DeMattos,
wife of Joseph DeMattos.
Nina is buried at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery

Second Generation -
Dorothy Genevieve Avilla & husband
Toshio "Richard" Karasaki
DOROTHY GENEVIEVE AVILLA
eloped to Kamawela HI with a Japanese man, Toshio
Karasaki, also known as "Richard." Toshio was born in
Hawaii around 1911. They had three sons together, one of whom is still
living. Their son Richard Joseph S. Karasaki is below as the Third
Generation for this webpage. Ultimately Toshio and Dorothy divorced and he later died in
1956. Meanwhile Dorothy married a second time to a George Goeas,
with whom she had a wonderful daughter.
Dorothy was a very loving, very intelligent
woman. One of her favorite sayings to express her overflowing love of
family was "love you to pieces!" Nice.
Dorothy A. Goaes died
in July 1991 in Honolulu and is buried at Diamond Head Memorial Park in
Honolulu, Plot: AAm-6-20.
Third Generation - Richard Joseph S. Karasaki
& wife
Genevieve Catherine Freitas
Dorothy and Toshio's son,
Richard Joseph S. Karasaki
was born in 1934 and died in 1996 in Hawaii. Richard Joseph
married the 20-year old Genevieve Catherine Freitas
in 1954, just two years before his father Toshio passed away.
His wife, Genevieve Catherine, died January 30, 1985.
Richard worked for the Pearl
Harbor Naval Base as a Group Superintendent, from where he ultimately
retired.
