Bernerts are from French-Alsace Lorraine region.  Some Bernerts moved to Austria-Hungary when the French annexed the region.
 In Austria-Hungary the Bernerts of our family attended the
Evangelical Lutheran Church

JOSEPH MARTIN BERNERT married (1) ELIZABETH MANTON, likely in Yugoslavia.  He married (2) UNKNOWN.   Elizabeth and Joseph had three known  sons:  Christian Bernert born in Yugoslavia on August 10th 1881; Peter Bernert, born 31 May 1878; and a Jacob Bernert (who remained in Germany).

was born in Yugoslavia to Joe and Elizabeth Manton Bernert..

Elizabeth Manton Bernert,
mother of Christian Bernert, died when Christian was about a 1-2 years old. His father, Joseph Martin Bernert, remarried.  Christian had 8 or 9 half brothers.

Julia Roff (Crist Bernert's future wife) was born in Hertphalne Hungary.

Crist Bernert, at age 8,
 was "sold" as a blacksmith's apprentice to work.  He lived with the blacksmith family for a couple of years...when he ran away.   From then on he was on his own.  Crist taught himself how to read and write and did very well.

CRIST BERNERT married (1) MARIA ROFF, daughter of CONRAD ROFF and ROSEALEE KEENERHe married (2) CATHERINE LEFLEUR.

1906   HUNGARY to OHIO -- Crist, Julia, Baby Elizabeth and Crist's brother Peter Bernert came to U.S. (Bucyrus, Ohio).
Per Barbara Bernert Keyser, daughter of Crist and Maria Roff Bernert:
Her parents, Crist and Maria came over to America one time to Ohio and her father  worked in a roundhouse with brother Peter Bernert.

Traveled back to Hungary around 1909.   Barbara believed that they returned to Atatavalva Austria- Hungary.

1920 CENSUS:  WAYNE COUNTY, DETROIT, MICHIGAN  taken on January 13th. ED 223, 318 Rapolle Street?


CRIST BERNERT, Head, Age 40 (born 1881), emigrated to America in "1913".  Still listed as "Alien" versus "Naturalized" in 1920.  CRIST, his wife Mary [Maria] (age 38, born about 1882 (actually on 26 Sep 1884) in Panscova, Austria-Hungary, his daughter Lizzie (age 14), his son Peter (age 12) and his daughter Barbara (age 10) all were born in "Hungary" per this Census instead of Ohio and Hungary as stated above, to Hungarian-born parents.  It is listed that Mary [Maria] could not read nor write [English], but the others could.  Chris was a factory laborer, and Mary did day work.  

11/19/1928: Likely in DETROIT, MICHIGAN
WHOSE????  Certificate of Naturalization #2834735 Petition 141, Number 34076, 11/19/1928: Brother Peter was 20 years; Barbara Rose 19 years and both resided at Detroit, Michigan.  Address for all: 2166 Holcomb Avenue, Detroit Michigan.  Birth citizenship: "Jugoslavia"

Note:  Page 507 Polk's Detroit City Directory, MI (year unknown) states that Barbara Bernert was a stenographer for The Bradstreet Company and she lived at 2166 Holcomb Ave.  On the same page "Christ" Bernert is listed at that address and working as a "diemkr" and son Peter Bernert is also listed at the same address and as a "diemkr".

April 2, 1930 CENSUS:  WAYNE COUNTY, DETROIT, MICHIGAN, District 663  Residence is 2166 Holcomb Avenue:

Crist Bernert owns their home valued at $10,000; he is 48 years old and was married the first time at the age of  "24".  His wife is his second wife, Catherine LeFleur Bernert, who married when she was 20 (to LeFleur? to Kyri?); she is now 41.

Crist's  son Peter Bernert is 21 and appears to have been born during their first year of marriage or soon thereafter.  Barbara, Crist's daughter is 20. Both Peter and Barbara Rose are single.  Susie Kyri is listed as the 18 years old single daughter of Crist and Catherine. Kyri was born in Michigan to Yugoslavian-born parents.  Kyri is working as a clerk for an insurance agency.   Susie Kyri is previously unknown to me ... is  Susie Kyri the daughter of Catherine LeFleur and was Catherine married to a Kyri at one time??).

Crist was born in Yugoslavia to Yugoslavian born parents; he is working in an automobile factory.  He immigrated in 1906 and is naturalized.  Crist and Catherine each spoke Magyar (Hungarian) before coming to the United States.

Wife, Catherine was born in Yugoslavia to Yugoslavian-born parents. She immigrated in 1905 (a year before Crist) and is naturalized.

Son, Peter was born in Ohio to Yugoslavian-born parents.

Daughter Barbara Rose was born in Panscova, Austria-Hungary to Yugoslavian-born parents.  She immigrated in 1913 at about age 3 and is became a USA citizen.  Barbara is listed as having spoken Magyar before coming back to the United States.

Barbara Rose's sister lives next door:  Bruno Kellner  and his wife Elizabeth Bernert Kellner (Barbara Rose's sister, and daughter of Crist and Maria) and their children Conrad and Barbara Kellner.  Barbara Kellner is a newborn.  Conrad is 2.  (They will have a third child, Bernard Kellner)

Bruno was born in Germany in on June 3, 1902.  Bruno is working for an adding machine company.  He immigrated in 1920 and is naturalized.  He spoke German before coming to the United States.  Bruno died February 3, 1995, in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Conrad and baby Barbara were born in Michigan to a German father (Bruno Kellner) and a Yugoslavian mother (Elizabeth Bernert).

5/27/1939: Barbara Rose Bernert and John Earl "Jack" Keyser marry. 

John Earl, nicknamed “Jack”, was born in 1907 in Ohio.   He was married twice, the second time to Barbara Bernert.   Barbara, a warm and loving woman, is the one who helped me originally with my research of the Keyser and Bernert lines. Barbara passed away in late 2003; I miss her.  

2/25/1942 DETROIT, MICHIGAN  Elizabeth Bernert Kellner. Barbara's sister: 
Alien Registration #5382046 Detroit MI dated 2/25/1942.  Distinctive marks: Mole on right side of face. 5' 6.5" 150 lbs. Lt Brown Hair. Resided in USA 28 years and 7 months prior to citizenship in USA. (From 1913 immigration)

03 Sep 1960 East Side General Hospital, Detroit, MI  Christian Bernert (Barbara Rose's father) dies.

08 Dec 1980 Gross Point Woods, Wayne County, MI Catherine LeFluer Bernert dies.

26 Jan 1993  Jack Keyser, husband of Barbara Rose Bernert Keyser, dies in Melbourne, FL

15 May 1994 Bloomfield, Oakland, Michigan Elizabeth (Mrs. Bruno) Kellner dies at   her residence in Mansfield Heights in Oakland.

3 February 1995 Royal Oak, Oakland, Michigan  Bruno Kellner dies.

22 Oct 2003  Barbara Rose Bernert Keyser dies in Melbourne, FL

 

Christian Bernert's brother Peter Bernert and his family:

Peter Bernert (Sr.) married a "Julia Ann."  They had a daughter, Maria Bernert.   Peter and his wife Julia Ann and his daughter Maria immigrated to the United States (see above on ships).  All are now deceased.  At one time lived in Mansfield, OH. where Peter was a well known home builder in the Mansfield OH area. Peter and Julia also had a son, named after his father, Peter (Jr.). 

 

 Peter Sr. was of medium height and small build with light blue eyes and dark brown hair per his WWI Draft Registration Card.

Peter Bernert (Sr.) was born 31 May 1878 in Hudusitze, Hungary, and died 18 Jan 1933 after an illness of 10 days; in Mansfield, OH at home.

Julia was born 27 Sep 1885 in Austria/Hungary; she died 15 Nov 1966 following a 6-month illness, at the age of 81, in Mansfield, Richland County, OH

Crist Bernert's cousins are Matt and Carl Bernert who moved to Chicago.   In the 1930 Federal Census a "Math" Bernert is listed as born about 1907 (he is 23 in 1930) and the son of Carl and Rose Bernert.
