PART 1:  CATOR FAMILY INFORMATION

WILLIAM CATOR (Likely his first name is James and middle name is William, by which he goes) was born February 1862 in Maryland; was an Episcopalian; died October 19, 1930 and is buried at St. Barnabas Church, Temple Hills, MD (on 10/22/30).  He married first MARY MARGARET LISTON, born in Ireland; and secondly, CHARITY CLIFTON, born December 15, 1874, died 13 Aug 1947; buried at St. Barnabas Church Cemetery also.  

 

 

 

1900 Census, Polk St., Wash. DC,  T623  Roll: 158  Page: 222:
William and Charity Cator:   "James" William Cator, age 38, born MD, living in DC on June 6, 1900.  He married Charity Clifton as his second wife.  She was 13 years younger than he, being born 15 December of 1874 in Silver Hill, MD. In 1900 they had been married 3 years.  William Charles Cator, James Cator and Margaret Marie/Maggie Cator were all children of William and Mary Margaret Liston Cator.  Edward is the one year old son of Charity and William.  


1910 Census, 2235(?) Chester Street, Wash. City, DC taken 6/6/1910; Dist 10. 
William and
Charity Cator own their home, which is free of any mortgage.  Son William is listed as William C. (for William Charles).  This is the 2nd marriage for William and the 1st marriage for his wife Charity (Clifton) Cator. William and Charity have a new daughter since the last census: Mary Myrtle Cator.  Interesting to note that William C., James, and Maggie are listed as their mother being born in Maryland (Charity) instead of their birth mother Mary Margaret Liston who was born in Ireland.   Head of Household, William Cator, is the only one employed and he is listed as a Teamster working at the government hospital (St. Elizabeth's).

NEW:   CHARITY CLIFTON CATOR'S DEATH:  DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THIS LISTS FATHER AS J. CATOR OF KENTUCKY AND MOTHER AS ELIZABETH CATOR OF MD.  (CHARITY WAS A CLIFTON)?????

 

Children of WILLIAM and CHARITY CLIFTON CATOR are:

Nephew: William and Charity Clifton Cator raised Robert Clifton, the son of Charity's sister who died giving birth to Robert.

ROBERT CLIFTON with dog.

Son, EDWARD CATOR, b. February 5, 1899; d. September 28, 1950, 117 36th St., N.E., Washington DC.   He married RUTH VIOLA WOOD May 8, 1919. She was born December 11, 1899, and died October 11, 1973.  Both are buried at Cedar Hills Cemetery, Suitland MD (Sec 12,  Lot 26, Site 6).

Daughter, MARY MYRTLE CATOR, b. 1901; d. at age 92 on October 15, 1993, buried at St. Barnabas Cemetery. MDMary Myrtle was close to Margaret Cator, daughter of William and Mary Margaret Liston Cator.

Ruth Viola Wood Cator and husband EDWARD CATOR
Married May 8, 1919:

Ruth Viola and Edward Cator had two sons.  One, William Edward Cator, born in 1920; married on June 1946 Helen Clara Rhymer; he died 14 Nov 2004 in Manassas VA.  Another child is still living and no information is presented here.   William Edward Cator apparently grew up on 15th St. S.E. in Washington,D.C.

 

1920 Census for Washington City, DC, lists that Edward and Ruth V. Cator boarded at the Winemiller's residence.  Clarence (Head of Household) is the Half Uncle of Edward Cator :

1930 Census:
Helen Rhymer Cator was born in Asheville, NC on December 11, 1919.  In 1930 at age 9, she lived with her family at 95 Swannanoa Avenue, in Asheville. All of her family were born in NC to NC-born parents.  Her father was Hardy Rhymer, a house plasterer.  Her mom was Sadie Rhymer. Helen's siblings are Roy (15), Bonnie (13), Marion (7), and Louise (3 yrs 8 months in April 1930).  Her parents in 1930 had been married since Hardy was 22 and Sadie was 18.  They are now 38 and 34 respectively.

Helen's Grandparents: HENRY SILAS AND MINERVA JANE CLARK RHYMER

HENRY SILAS RHYMER was born in 1861 in NC and died 2 Jan 1929 in Bladen, North Carolina at age 68. He married  MINERVA JANE CLARK in 1880. She was born 1858 and died on 20 Oct 1934 in Bladen at age 76NOTE: Believed that his father is Paxton Rhymer.

Married 30 years, Henry S. Rymer (Rhymer) is 49, a farmer, and married to Minerva (Clark), an "older woman" who is 52. They have living with them the following children:
Tesie, a daughter, age 20; single.   (She has one child who is living...likely:
Mary, the granddaughter listed on this page as less than a year old.

is now 58, still doing farming, and married to Jane M. (Clark) who is now 61. They still have living with them the following children:
Carrel (Carl), son, age 19, a laborer for the public road dept.

Mary, daughter (listed in 1910 Census as a granddaughter) age 10.

, who is likely Mary's mom is no longer residing at her parent's home.

Helen's Parents, HARDY THOMAS AND SADIE LAVIDA REDMOND RHYMER

Hardy T. Rhymer:  Father of Helen Rhymer Cator, was born 4 Aug 1894 in Leicester, Buncombe County, NC, and died 9 Oct 1975 in Asheville, Buncombe, North Carolina (age 78). He married Sadie Lavida Redmond 1914 likely in Asheville, NC. She was born 9 March 1897 in Fletcher, NC; NEW died 1982.  Hardy died at a general hospital in Asheville - no autopsy - buried in NC.

1920 Census 49 Lewis Street, Asheville, NC; Ward 4, District 19:
Hardy Thomas Rhymer
is 26 and married to Sadie who is 22. They have a son, Roy who is 5, a daughter Bonnie who is 3; and a daughter Helen who is only one month old.  They were all born in NC.  Hardie is a "transfer man" for Southern Railway.

Hardy Rhymer, now listed as 38, works as a house plasterer, evidently no longer working for the railroad. Sadie is 34 (both being listed as 12 years older than in the previous census).  The following children live with them in 1930:  Helen Rhymer /Cator (see above)/ was born in Asheville, NC on December 11, 1919.  Helen's siblings are Roy (15), Bonnie (13), Marion (7), and Louise (3 yrs 8 months in April 1930).  Her parents in 1930 had been married since Hardy was 22 and Sadie was 18.
