1910 Census:  Taken on April 26, at  Honolulu City, Oahu, HI at 1517 Luso Lane.  Manuel was 25 (born 1885).  They had 4 children, MAGGIE FREITAS (1906); GEORGE FREITAS (1908); MARION FREITAS, born on 16 July 1907.  Son Marion is listed as "Marianno".   And an Alfredo, age 1 (1909...could this be son FREDERICK FREITAS?)

1920 Census:  Taken on January 18, at Honolulu, Oahu, HI on 1539B Lusitania Street, where they rented their home.  Although unclear on the copy, it appears that Manuel was working as an engineer for a pumping station.  On this Census Kate was 31 (born about 1889) and Manuel was 34 (born about 1886)

1930 Census: Taken on April 15, at Honolulu City, Oahu, HI on 1649 Fort Street.  At this point, Manuel was now a widower, age 42 (about 1888). Only his three youngest sons were still living at his home:  REYNOLD was 16 (1915), CLARENCE 14 (about 1916), and LARRY12 (about 1918). MANUEL FREITAS was working as a truck driver for a machine shop.  None of his sons were working per this Census.

Second Generation - Reynold Benedict Freitas, husband
and wife, Emily Andrade

REYNOLD BENEDICT FREITAS, was born on March 11, 1915.  His wife EMILY ANDRADE was born Dec. 2, 1910 in Hawaii.  Reynold died 12 Nov 1987 in Honolulu.   Emily  died July 6th 1989, two years after Reynold. They are buried at Diamond Head Memorial Park in  Honolulu at Plot SEC H-G 24.

* Emily's Portuguese name was something like "Emalia."

1940 Census: Taken on April 3, at Honolulu City (Tract 2), Oahu, HI on 1748 Colburn St. Reynolds was working as a general helper at the Navy Yard.  He was making $1083/pay period, working a 40 hour week and and was renting their home. Reynolds was 26 and his wife Emily was two years older, at 28 (born about 1912). Reynolds completed 4th grade and Emily 8th grade.  Their daughter Genevieve is 5; daughter Adeline is 2 and son Reynolds (Jr.) is 9 months old.  Living with them is Isabella (Isabel) Andrade, who is Reynolds sister-in-law.  She is 18 and was born in California.  She completed through the 7th grade.

Reynolds was a memorable man loved by his family.  One of the tiny stories about Reynolds was the way he would refer to people as "donkeys".  Should you drive down the road and someone cuts you off, his "What a Donkey!" would fit quite well.

More on Emily Andrade:  She was first generation American.  Her dad, Francisco Joseph "Jose: de Andrade (photo right) was born in Sao Miguel, Portugal on Feb. 11, 1881.  Her mother Maria "Cozy" Sypriano (photo below) was born in Livramento, Azores on January 1, 1894.  When Joseph and Maria married, Maria was also just 15!  Maria died at Sacred Heart Hospital in Hanford CA on July 19, 1981.  Francisco Joseph Andrade died in Oakland, CA but I have no other information.

Emily was a waitress at a soda shop and for many years she cleaned the apartments where
the Hawaii Islanders professional baseball team lived. Many of the players spoke Portuguese, had great stories that Emily shared and she was beloved by them.

This is a picture of the mother of Cozy, Maria Da Conceicao born about 1869 on San Miguel Island in the Azores, Portugal.  This picture was likely in California in the 30s or 40s per the owner on Ancestry.

The children of Reynold and Emily Andrade Freitas are:

GENEVIEVE CATHERINE FREITAS, born 8 Jul 1934, Hawaii; d. 30 Jan 1985, Hawaii; m. RICHARD JOSEPH S. KARASAKI, 6 Nov 1954, Hawaii; b. 14 Nov 1934, Honolulu; d. 11 May 1996, Kaiser Hospital, Hawaii.

ADELINE M. FREITAS, born in Hawaii December 7th, 1937.  On the day of her 4th birthday  the attack on Pearl Harbor happened.  She died in Honolulu on January 5th, 1989 per the SSDI. She lived 51 years. and was a Sagittarius.  Adeline did not marry.

Adeline is buried at Diamond Head Memorial Park in Honolulu at Plot Sec. H-G-23

Note:  Adeline's Aunt on her mom's side was also named Adeline.

REYNOLD BENEDICT FREITAS, JR., born 3 Jun 1939, Hawaii; died 18 Sep 1998 at the age of 59.  His wife was Shirley Ann N. Smith; they married in Clark, NV on Sept 28, 1984.  Reynold worked with the Public Works Center.    Here is a picture of "Grandpa Reynolds."

     Genevieve Catherine Freitas and husband
     Richard Joseph Sunao Karasaki

Richard Joseph Sunao Karasaki was born on November 14, 1934 in Honolulu and died in May 11, 1996 in Hawaii; he married Genevieve Catherine Freitas on November 6, 1954.  Genevieve was born on July 8, 1934 and died in Hawaii January 30, 1985 at the age of 50.  Richard J. S. Karasaki retired from the Pearl Harbor Naval Base as a Group Superintendent.  He is  buried at Hawaiian Memorial Park, Kaneohe Hawaii.

Note:  Joe believed in doing things right the first time.  He did not want to just "slap things together."  He enjoyed Vince Lombardi and Nat King Cole to which he often sang in his rich deep voice.  Joe and Genevieve were a great team and terrific parents.   They had two sons and one daughter.
