GENERATION 1:  1800-1881
CAPT. WM. HENRY ROIX AND ALLURA MAYEW ROIX

Allura Mayhew and William Henry Roix were married November 1st 1816 in Hancock County, Mass. 

In the 1850 census a William Roix is first listed as 67 years old (which would mean he was born in 1783 and the second listed is "Aldaia" 52 (b. about 1799).  This would be Allura Mayhew Roix.  In 1850 the homes on either side of theirs are owned by the Phineas Mayhew family and the Alfred Mayhew family. 

In her elder years as a widow Allura will live with her daughter Margaret's family, the Walkers.  NOTE:  In Greenough's Directory for Rockland, Belfast & Camden, we know that Allura was the last wife of William Roix as she is listed as his widow.  She is boarding at Samuel Walker's home on Pearl St. (her daughter's home)

Their marriage is listed in the Vital Records of Belfast Maine as:

Note: Hancock County is now Maine and Three Mile Square Plantation was within this County.

History of Belfast Maine book lists that Allura Mayhew, 82, is the widow of the late Capt. William R. Roix:

 

Appears Capt. Wm R. Roix died in prison!?

Wm. Roix died in 1877 and Allura died in 1881.  Children John, David, Alfred, Mary and Mary died before William did. 

      

GENERATION 2:  1820-18  
CHILDREN OF ALLURA MAYHEW AND CAPT. WILLIAM HENRY ROIX:

 

 

 

 Both David and Alfred died of TB two years apart.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1)  OUR LINE: Capt. William Richard Roix.  Born April 7 1820 in Belfast; died Nov 18, 1885 in Boston.  He married Rachel B. Platt on August 2nd 1784 in Lynn Mass.  They had one known daughter, Martha Jane Roix born Sept. 10 1842. Died 15 Oct 1878 in Belfast Maine. By 1880 census he was living in Belfast Maine again.  Died in Boston, Mass five years later.  He was the captain of the Steamer Kathadin: 

2)  Capt. John Roix. Born 1822 in Maine.  Died when he drowned in Jacksonville Harbor in Florida on May 5, 1874.  He married an Abigail LNU.  In 1850 census (below) he is a sailor. 
Residence in 1850 is with his parents and he is 28 (likely at sea).
He is a Master Mariner by age 37. Residence in 1870 is listed as household of Samuel (43) and Margaret Roix Walker (39) in Belfast. A Rachel B. Pratt 39 a school teacher is also living with the Walkers. Capt.
 

3)  Capt. David Roix married Abbie M. LNU.  David was born in 1827 in Maine and died on April 16, 1865 in Belfast, ME.
Residence in 1850 is with his parents and he is not yet married at age 23. David is not living with his siblings in 1860.  In 1877 in Greenough's Directory, Abbie is listed as a widow of David Roix and she is living with sister Margaret Roix Walker's family on Pearl St.  David died of Consumption (Tuberculosis) in 1865.

4) Capt. Alfred M. Roix was born on September 21, 1828 in ME.  He died Aug. 2, 1867 in Belfast, ME.  Residence in 1860 is with his siblings at age 30.  He is a Master Mariner.  Alfred married Mary Ann Dennett in 1861,  but died just 6 years after they wed.  Alfred Roix died in 1867 of Consumption (Tuberculosis), as had his brother David died two years earlier.


 

5) Margaret/Margarite Roix was born about 1832 in Maine and died in Belfast on October 31, 1885 of cancer.  She married Samuel H. Walker.  They had children Walter L. Walker b. 1861 in Belfast and Nellie E. Walker b. 1865 in Belfast:
Residence in 1850 is with her parents and she is age 19. Residence in 1860 is with his wife's siblings at age 26; Margarite is 28.
Her husband Samuel H. Walker is a ship's carpenter.
Has own residence in 1870 with wife Margaret and their children Walter L. Walker age 9 and Nellie E. Walker age 4.  Brother John Roix and a Rachel Pratt live with them. John may well be at sea. In 1880 he is Head of Household and a Ship Carpenter at age 52.  His son Walter is working in a shoe factory and his wife and daughter are "at home."  Living with them is Allura Roix, Mother-in-law, Widowed, age 81. 
 
6) Mary A. Roix  was born June 20, 1834 and died Jan. 12, 1863 in Waldo County, ME.  She is buried at Grove Cemetery in Belfast.  She m. Capt. Garrison Arey on June 14, 1854 and they had one child, William Amasa Arey, born in 1856.

Residence in 1860 for the couple is with his wife's siblings.
Both are age 26; He is a Master Mariner.  (He may be at sea). They have a son living with them in 1860, William Amasa Arey who is 3 years old.

Her husband Capt. Garrison Arey died at sea on April 9, 1893. 

 

 

7) Vinal M. Roix, born in 1837, Belfast Maine.
Residence in 1850 is with his parents and he is 15 years old then.
Residence in 1860 is with his siblings and he is 23 per Census and a Seaman.
Per the Waldo County Maine Death records, Vinal died of Consumption (Tuberculosis)
on May 21, 1861 at 24 years 7 months.
NEW:  Vinal M. Roix Grave at Grove Cemetery, Range 11, Lot 11. Buried 1861
8)  Albert A. Roix and Abbie Holbrook Carter married in 1865 and had one daughter
Edna G. Roix, born June 5, 1867 in Belfast.
Residence in 1850 is with his parents and he is 13 years old then. Residence in 1860 is with his siblings and he is 20 per Census and a Seaman.  Residence in 1870 is as a 30 year old mariner living with his 23 year old wife Abbie Roix who works "at home." 1880 Census: Albert A. Roix, son-in-law to Delila W. Carter, age 40, b. ME. He works in Shoe Factory.    Died Age: 69. Organic Disease of the Heart
 

GENERATION 3 - Roix and Southworth:

MARTHA JANE ROIX AND husband DANA BOARDMAN SOUTHWORTH

9) OUR LINE:  Martha Jane Roix, daughter of Capt. William Richard Roix married Dana Boardman Southworth. 

They had the following children: Fred M. 1865 died at age 25; Edith b. 1870 (never married);
Ralph Dana Southworth (Our Line); and Augusta Southworth died age 6 months.

Martha was born on September 10, 1842 in Belfast.  Residence in 1850 is with her parents and she is 8 years old then. Residence in 1860 is with her siblings and she is 18 and working in a tailor shop. She died at age 36 from throat disease in October of 1878.  At the time of her death her hair was pure white despite her young age.

Dana Southworth, the son of Samuel and Jane Halleck Southworth, was born on May 20, 1836 in Searsmont ME.  Dana and Martha Jane married on Feb. 19, 1863 in Belfast.  He died on Dec 4 1905 of organic heart disease at the age of 69. 

Dana owned the Belfast Livery Company with stables and stagecoach runs from Belfast to Augusta and Rockland and from Belfast to Bangor and back.  He owned a stable of approximately 50 horses.  At stage time, the stable was run by a manager.  The livery was located on High Street opposite the Masonic Temple.

Martha and Dana had a son, FRED M. SOUTHWORTH b. 1865 in Belfast and died September 3 1890 at age 25.  Fred did not marry. He worked in a cloth department of local store that caught on fire.  He took the goods out in the cold weather during the fire, got pneumonia and died.  Martha and Dana also had a daughter, EDITH M. SOUTHWORTH, b Feb. 3, 1870 and died
Nov 21 1950.  She also never married. Their third child was RALPH DANA SOUTHWORTH (OUR LINE) b. 18 May 1873, Belfast; d. 9 Nov 1941, Belfast in my father's arms!  Their fourth child was AUGUSTA A. SOUTHWORTH b. 11 Apr 1877, Belfast; d. 14 Oct 1877, Belfast - age 6 mo. of infant cholera.

GENERATION 3:  1820-18  

RALPH DANA SOUTHWORTH and ALVRA MEAD CUNNINGHAM

Ralph Dana Southworth was born on May 18, 1879 in Belfast ME. He died in my father's arms on November 9, 1941 in Belfast at home.  Ralph died of lobar pneumonia. 

Ralph was of medium build, had light blue eyes and dark brown hair.  He owned a clothing store, a haberdashery and was also the Belfast City Clerk from 1930-1941.  His company at one time was Ralph D. Southworth Company at 12 Main Street in Belfast. 

Alvra, my great grandmother, was born on May 16, 1879 in Searsport, Maine.  They married on the 1st of  September in 1895 in Belfast.  In the 1940s she moved with her daughters Jane and Alice and grandson Bob and his wife to Hartford CT.  Alvra ultimately died in Hartford on July 20, 1962 from cancer.

1850 Census for Belfast Maine:
William Roix, a 67 year old farmer in 1850, is married to "Aldaia" (b. about 1783) and she 52 (b. about 1799) .  Their 8 known children are John 28 who is a sailor; David 23; Alfred 21; Margarite 19; Mary 17; Vinal 15; Albert A. 13 and Martha Jane Roix who is 8 in 1850. 

1860 Census for Belfast Maine:

In 1860 the first person listed is John Roax (Roix) age 37 and a Master Mariner.  Living in this household are also brother Alfred Roax (Roix) age 30 and also a Master Mariner; Vinal Roax (Roix) age 23 and a Seaman; Albert Road (Roix) age 20, Seaman; Martha Roax (Roix) age 18 working in a tailor shop; Samuel Walker age 26 husband of Margaret Roix Walker who is 28; Garrison Arey Master Mariner husband of Mary A. Roix who is also 26.  Lastly is William Arey, son of Garrison and Mary, at age 3

1870 Census for Belfast Maine for Margaret and Samuel Walker and John Roix:

Samuel (43) and Margaret Y. Roix Walker (39)  are in the 1870 Belfast census.  Living with them are their children Walter L. Walker age 9 and Nellie E. age 4.  Also in the home is John Roix 48 a Mariner and Rachel B. Pratt 39 a School Teacher. 

1877 Greenough's Directory for Rockland, Belfast & Camden
The following Roix's are listed for Belfast in 1877.  Per this we know that Allura was the last wife (and only known wife) of William Roix as she is listed as his widow.  She is boarding at S. Walker's on Pearl St.  Sam Walker is married to William and Allura's daughter Margarite/Margaret Roix Walker.  Walker is a Ship's carpenter.

William R. Roix is listed as the Captain of the Steamer Katahdin and he lives on High near Pearl St. in Belfast.

The above Samuel H. Walker is listed in the 1880 census as the son-in-law of Allura Roix (age 81; born abt 1799) and the husband of Alvra's daughter Margaret Y. Roix Walker.  Sam'l and Margaret have a son Walter L, age 19 and Nellie E. who is 15.
