GENERATION NEW

Caleb Pendleton and wife Elizabeth Lamphere (?)

GENERATION 1

JAMES PENDLETON was born about 1689 in Westerly, RI, where he died on June 9, 1753. James married Elizabeth Brown on January 6, 1717/18; she was born on May 9, 1694 in Stonington, CT.

GENERATION 2  and 3

Thomas was born 3 JAN 1718/19 in Westerly, Rhode Island and

died about  1809 in Deer Island, NB, Canada

JOSHUA PENDLETON  was born 2 Jun 1755 in Stonington, CT and died 1 Feb 1844 in Belfast or Northport, ME.  He married SALLY OR NANCY NUTTER.   Around  1771 he settled in Islesboro Maine with other members of his family.  Sometime around 1810 he moved to Northport Maine and it was here in War of 1812 that his home was robbed by the British (tradition says it happened in Revolutionary War!)  At the time of his death, his widow was "Catherine" Patten who was his 4th wife.

GENERATION 4 - CHILDREN OF JOSHUA AND SALLY

Children of JOSHUA PENDLETON and SALLY or NANCY  NUTTER are:

NANCY PENDLETON, born in 1775 at Islesboro, ME, died on January 3rd 1830.  During her lifetime she married WILLIAM PENDLETON, likely a cousin on January 9th in 1795.  William was born June 17th 1769 in Westerly RI and died on March 20th, 1824 in Searsport -- about 5 years before Nancy.  Both are both buried in Bowditch Cemetery. William Pendleton was the son of Peleg and Anne Park Pendleton of Searsport and the twin of Abigail Pendleton.  See next generation.

SALLY  PENDLETON, born in 1777 at Islesboro; married Alban Elwell about 1794; died in 1854.  No other information.

LOIS  PENDLETON, born in 1781 at Islesboro; married William Burns JR. of Islesboro on 22 January 1799.  She died in Bremen Maine on June 10, 1866.

One of their sons, Nelson, went to Australia, where he married and had his family and his descendants now spread over both Australia and New Zealand.  Tradition says...Nelson jumped ship when he got to Melbourne, Australia. And that he was married to a Susan L before she died in 1851, perhaps in Maine.  Ultimately in Australia he met Mary  Ann Martin and they have 5 children, then married and had 7 more.

1ST POSSIBLE WM. BURNS PARENTAGE:

Nelson's father, William Burns, was the son of William Burns Sr. b 1741 in Boothbay area of Maine and Elizabeth Young b 1746.  Elizabeth was Sr.'s second wife and they wed on July 26 1767.  Sr.'s first wife was Margaret Fullerton, whom he married in Boothbay about 4 years earlier (about 1763)  and must have divorced as Margaret was born 1741 and did not die until April 17, 1822 in Boothbay Maine after she became Mrs. William McClintock in 1773 and had 2 children with McClintock.

Other new info:  William  Burns died October 28, 1856.  Lois and William Burns likely had the following children:

William Burns III, born May 10, 1800 in Bristol, Maine.  He married Permelia Andrews and had a daughter Mary G. Burns born 1825. Wm. III served as a Coast-Guard in the War of 1812.  Mary G. Died in 1873.  Mary was the wife of Vincent Richards.   Picture of Mary G. Richards:

Green Burns, b. 27 Oct 1801 and married 1) Sarah Smith and 2) Jane Jones.

John Burns, b. 12 Feb. 1803.

Nancy Burns, b. 10 Feb 1805; married William Taylor.

Joseph Burns, b. 10 Feb. 1805; d. 2 years later on 28 Nov 1809 (died young)

Sally Burns 1809-1817 (died about age 8)

James Burns 1812-1812 (died at birth or stillborn)

Betsey, b 3 May 1813; died 18 Nov 1814 (died young)

Thomas Burns b. July 9, 1817

Nelson Burns b. December 28, 1821 in Bremen, Lincoln Maine.  Married 1:  Sarah Barker.  Then he settled in Australia where he married again.

Joseph Burns  b. 31 Dec 1823- died 10 April.  M. 8 Aug. 1843 Ann Lauretta Lawler.  He was a solider of the Civil War, serving in Co. I, 21st Regt. Me. Volunteers.  His daughter Mrs. Lois Carter of East Weymouth, MA had the family bible from which most of this record was taken.  Another daughter Mrs. Bainbridge L. Coggan, lived at Muscongus, Maine per the book Brian Pendleton and his Descendants, 1599-1910 (Search for it on Google Books.

2ND POSSIBLE WM. BURNS PARENTAGE From  "The Old Bestia Book":

"William b.Nov.12, 1733, m 1st Mary (Maxwell), m 2nd Elizabeth (Young) T.R.2
Dea. William, h. Margaret (McClintock), d May 13, 1821, a 88y. G R 38
(s. Joseph who settled under Dunbar T.R. 4) (dup. b Nov 23 T.R. 2)
chn: (1st wife) Elizabeth, Mary M. (2nd w. Hannah, Jeane, Thomas, Cathryn, Wm.
(1 male over 16; 5 under 16; 6 females. U.S.C 1790, B)
"

William's father was Joseph, the said "settler under Dunbar" and Joseph and his brother William seemed to be the earliest members of the Burns clan to settle in Maine

William, son of Joseph, seemed to sometimes go by the name 'Deacon' as in the Dea above.

It would also appear that William had several more children (1790 census) than we have names for. And there is that "dup. b Nov, 23" entry, so perhaps that means his birthdate is either the 12th or the 23rd, or maybe the 23rd was his christening date.

Grandson Nelson Burns:
"Nelson, sailor, a. 28y., h. Susan ( ), in fam. John Baker. U.S.C. 1805, B
(h. Susan L, G.R. 111)
"

And Susan:
"Susan L. ( ), w. Capt. Nelson, d. Aug 30, 1851, a 27y. 7 m. G.R. 111
And their children
Susan, ch. Nelson & Susan L., d. Sep. 21, 1851
Lorenzo, a. 1y., under Nelson & Susan U.S.C. 1850, B
"

William's first wife was definitely Susan L who probably died in childbirth and the baby Susan soon after. Lorenzo would have been born about 1849.  Nelson and Susan were with the Baker or Barker family at the time of the 1850 census.

So.....perhaps after Susan died he married Sarah Barker? And maybe he left her (and his son Lorenzo) behind when he took off to Australia with a boat load of gold prospectors!

From right to left this is Mary Emmeline Porter Smith, her husband Stephen B. Smith, and their daughter Leila M. Smith Libby.

Mary Emmeline is certainly a highly photographic woman with stern, strong facial features. Living in Maine can be very harsh and she carries herself as being up to the task.
