Joseph Josiah Smith m. Mary Ann LNU
Joseph Josiah Smith was born in 1799
in Mecklenburg County, NC. By the 1860 census
he was a resident of Griggs, Van Buren, AR. Josiah
married Mary Ann whose last name
may have been Glearin. Mary Ann was supposedly born in
NC also in 1806, 7 years junior to
Josiah.
Mary Ann died on the 3rd of January in 1891 in Cumberland
County, TN.
The 1850 Census
for Red River AR taken on October 30th in Van Buren, AR lists
Josiah, a farmer, as 50. Their
children are Maryann
Smith 20 (born 1830) in Georgia. James C. Smith age
17 and a laborer (born about 1833) and James' wife, Mary Martha
Smith also 17; William Smith 14 (born about 1836); Paralee Smith
9 (born about 1841); and
Litha or Letha Ann Smith 7 (born about 1842/43) The
value of their real estate was $301. Maryann was born in
Georgia; the other children in TN .
The 1860 Census
for Griggs, Van Buren County, AR lists Josiah Smith as 60.
He is a farmer with property worth $1400 and personal property
valued at $1080. He was born in NC.
His daughter Maryann,
32 and this time born in NC, is still living at
home. Also in the home are: daughter Letha Ann
age 14 (10 years before she was 7!);
Catherine Christopher age 6 born about
1854;
Margaretta Christopher, age 4 (born about 1856), and William Christopher, age 36
(born about 1824),
a laborer.

CHRISTOPHER IS THE 5TH GREAT GRAND UNCLE OF MY GRANDCHILDREN.
NOTE:
William Christopher was married (1) to ____________ and
married (2) to Louisiana Ragsdale Smith (widow). By
his first marriage William had Margaretta and Catherine as
two known daughters. Catherine grew up to marry Thomas
Cail on 9 March 1872 per the marriage index of Arkansas for
the various counties.

Following the death of Letha in 1884 (following birth of
Rebecca?), Charles Thomas Williams married Letha's
niece, daughter of Letha's brother James C. Smith, (2) Elizabeth
Jenny Smith on June 5, 1888 when he was 45 and Elizabeth
Jenny was about 35 . They had
one child, a boy, Charles C. Williams born Feb. 14, 1889 and
died 22 Aug 1914. Charles Thomas Williams died at 57
on Feb. 8, 1900 in
Choctaw, AR.

was born in 1828 in Henderson, TN.
He
died in the Civil War in 1862. Anderson was a Third Sgt who
enlisted
at Clinton, AR on January 22, 1862 at age 35. He was absent
from the regiment due to illness and was reduced to Private.
He died in the latter part of 1862. He was buried in
Nashville National Cemetery, TN in Grave A 4479 on October 11, 1862.
His wife, Louisa Ann "Louisana" Ragsdale
was born
in 1827 in TN. She died in 1894 in Van Buren County, AR.

"Becky" Swafford on 07 Dec 1884 in Van Buren County,
AR. He died in July 27, 1897 in AR.
Becky was 17 when they married (born 11/28/1867) and
he was 30. She died April 12, 1896.
Their wedding was on 7 Dec 1884.
From Ancestry: "By
this time Rice Smith had lost his wife to gangrene
of the intestines which left him with a young son,
Willie, and two girls, Lucy and Mandy. He tried to
keep up with the home and do his farming as well.
The next summer he walked with Willie the three or
four miles to Bob Jennings home [Sallie Ann
Jennings' brother]. He said, “Bob, I am
going to die very soon. Will you take Willie and let
him live with you?” Bob said, “Sure Rice.” He left
Willie and walked back home to the two little girls,
Lucy and Mandy. It was only after a few days when he
took both girls to their grandmother, Mrs. Swafford,
so they could have a good home. It was only one
month later when Rice died with some type of a
stomach problem.
