GEN #1:
Joseph Josiah Smith m. Mary Ann LNU

Joseph Josiah Smith was born in 1799 in Mecklenburg County, NC.   By the 1860 census he was a resident of Griggs, Van Buren, AR.   Josiah married Mary Ann whose last name may have been Glearin.  Mary Ann was supposedly born in NC also in 1806, 7 years junior to Josiah.  Mary Ann died on the 3rd of January in 1891 in Cumberland County, TN. 

 

The 1850 Census for Red River AR taken on October 30th in Van Buren, AR lists Josiah, a farmer, as 50.  Their children are Maryann Smith 20 (born 1830) in Georgia.  James C. Smith age 17 and a laborer (born about 1833) and James' wife, Mary Martha Smith also 17; William Smith 14 (born about 1836); Paralee Smith 9 (born about 1841); and Litha or Letha Ann Smith 7 (born about 1842/43)  The value of their real estate was $301.  Maryann was born in Georgia; the other children in TN .

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The 1860 Census for Griggs, Van Buren County, AR lists Josiah Smith as 60.  He is a farmer with property worth $1400 and personal property valued at $1080.  He was born in NC.  His daughter Maryann, 32 and  this time born in NC, is still living at home.  Also in the home are:  daughter Letha Ann age 14 (10 years before she was 7!); Catherine Christopher age 6 born about 1854; Margaretta Christopher, age 4 (born about 1856), and William Christopher, age 36 (born about 1824), a laborer. 

 

NOTE:  WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER IS THE 5TH GREAT GRAND UNCLE OF MY GRANDCHILDREN.

NOTE:  William Christopher was married (1) to ____________ and married (2) to Louisiana Ragsdale Smith (widow).  By his first marriage William had Margaretta and Catherine as two known daughters.  Catherine grew up to marry Thomas Cail on 9 March 1872 per the marriage index of Arkansas for the various counties.

Josiah Smith Death Aug. 16, 1869 in Van Buren Co. AR 

 

If he married a Mary Ann Parks of Rhea County, TN he did so on May 10, 1826

 

Joseph Josiah Smith and his wife Mary Ann had the following 6 children: 

 

1)  Anderson Booker "A B" Smith  *See Generation #2  b. 1828 in Henderson, TN; died on 11 Oct 1862 in the Civil War.

 

2)  Mary Ann Smith was born in 1830 in Georgia or NC.

 

3)  James C Smith b.1833 Henderson, TN.  Married Mary Ann Martha Polk.  To her nieces and nephews she was known as "Aunt Pop". 

Children of James C. and Mary Ann Martha Polk Smith were:

          Elizabeth Jenny Smith was born in 1853 in AR.  Following the death of her Aunt Letha, Elizabeth Jenny Smith, married Letha's widower, Charles Thomas Williams
Sally M Smith was born in 1855 in Van Buren County, AR.
Josiah W. Smith was born in 1857 in Van Buren County, AR.
 
Charles Smith was born in 1858 in Van Buren County, AR

               James Smith was born in 1863 in Van Buren County, AR

 

4)  William Smith was born in 1836 in Henderson, TN.

 

5)  Paralee or Pairlee Smith was born in 1841 in Henderson, TN.

 

 

6) Letha Ann Smith was born in 1842 in Henderson, TN  and she married Charles Thomas Williams (1842-1900).  Charles was married first to Letha. They had the following children: 
Josiah A. Williams
was born in 1868 in AR and died 1951 at 83.
James Thomas Williams was born in 6/9/1869 in Pee Dee AR; d. 9/27/1954 at age85.
Daniel Andrew Williams was born in 1872 in AR.

               Samuel A. Williams born 1872 in AR.
Marinda Pairlee Williams was born in 1874 in AR; d. 1927 at age 53.
Martha L Williams
was born in 1876 in AR; d. 8/30/1911 at age 35.
Nancy A Williams was born in 18 May 1878 in AR; died. Oct 26, 1926 at age 48.

               William Garfield Williams born 31 May 1881 in Van Buren AR; d. June 15, 1962 at age 81.

               Rebecca Emma Williams b 22 Oct 1884; died July 11, 1954 at age 69.

 

Following the death of Letha in 1884 (following birth of Rebecca?), Charles Thomas Williams married Letha's niece, daughter of Letha's brother James C. Smith, (2) Elizabeth Jenny Smith on June 5, 1888 when he was 45 and Elizabeth Jenny was about 35 .  They had one child, a boy, Charles C. Williams born Feb. 14, 1889 and died 22 Aug 1914.  Charles Thomas Williams died at 57 on Feb. 8,  1900 in Choctaw, AR.

Anderson Booker Smith m. Louisa Ann "Louisana" Ragsdale
MARRIAGE 1947 (HER FIRST MARRIAGE)

 

Anderson Booker "A B" Smith was born in 1828 in Henderson, TN. He died in the Civil War in 1862.  Anderson was a Third Sgt who enlisted at Clinton, AR on January 22, 1862 at age 35.  He was absent from the regiment due to illness and was reduced to Private.  He died in the latter part of 1862.   He was buried in Nashville National Cemetery, TN in Grave A 4479 on October 11, 1862.

 

His wife, Louisa Ann "Louisana" Ragsdale was born in 1827 in TN. She died in 1894 in Van Buren County, AR.

CIVIL WAR SERVICE OF ANDERSON BOOKER SMITH:

 

Anderson Booker "A B" Smith and Louisa Ann "Louisana" Ragsdale had the following children: 

1)  Mary J Smith was born in 1847 in TN.

BETWEEN 1847 AND 1849 BIRTHS.)
 

2)  Martha Ann Emaline Smith was born in 1849 in Van Buren County, AR.

 

 

3)  Josiah Abner Smith was born in 5/3/1851 in Van Buren County, AR. He died 1/31/1928. He married Sarah Marinda Smith (cousin?).  They have five known children.

 

 

 

4)  William Rice Smith was born on 6 Mar 1854 in Griggs, Van Buren County, AR. He married Rebecca Jane "Becky" Swafford on 07 Dec 1884 in Van Buren County, AR. He died in July 27, 1897 in  AR.  Becky was 17 when they married (born 11/28/1867) and he was 30.  She died April 12, 1896.  Their wedding was on 7 Dec 1884.

 

From Ancestry:  "By this time Rice Smith had lost his wife to gangrene of the intestines which left him with a young son, Willie, and two girls, Lucy and Mandy. He tried to keep up with the home and do his farming as well. The next summer he walked with Willie the three or four miles to Bob Jennings home [Sallie Ann Jennings' brother]. He said, “Bob, I am going to die very soon. Will you take Willie and let him live with you?” Bob said, “Sure Rice.” He left Willie and walked back home to the two little girls, Lucy and Mandy. It was only after a few days when he took both girls to their grandmother, Mrs. Swafford, so they could have a good home. Their graves are located at Hunter Hill Cemetery in Clinton, AR and inscribed
"Beloved Parents and Devoted Christians".

William Rice Smith and Rebecca Jane "Becky" Swafford had the following three known children:

i. William "Willie" Powderly SMITH was born on 13 Dec 1886 in Clinton, Van Buren, AR. He "married" Sallie Ann JENNINGS about 13 Sep 1911 in Van Buren County, AR. Actual marriage did not happen tho' license obtained. He died on 02 Apr 1981 in Little Rock, Pulaski, AR. Sallie Ann JENNINGS was born on 02 Nov 1883 in Choctaw, Van Buren, AR. She died on 30 Jan 1976 in Oklahoma as Mrs. Thomas following her marriage to John Sherman Thomas. William Powderly Smith or Willie was the young son who went to live with his "future wife" Sallie's  brother in the story above, Robert Lee " Bob" Jennings.

               Festus Lane SMITH was born on 22 Mar 1911 in Choctaw, Van Buren, AR. He married Florence Lillian Gibson on 22 Dec 1934 in Tahlequah, Cherokee, OK. He died on 21 Feb 1994 in Searcy, White, AR.  Festus Lane SMITH and Florence Lillian Gibson were married on 22 Dec 1934 in Tahlequah, Cherokee, OK. They had the following children:  Doris Nadine SMITH and   Marcella Faye SMITH (a nun).   ×Festus and Lillian Gibson Smith

 

Following the death of William Powderly Smith, Sallie Ann Jennings married John Sherman Thomas:

 

 

 

5)  James B Smith was born in 1857 in Van Buren County, AR.

 

6)  Elizabeth Jane Smith was born in 1859 in Van Buren County, AR.
